I was amazed to read that a man of the cloth in 1910 was preaching that we mortals are capable of becoming what Christ was.. and he encourages us to do so. He discounts Original Sin and condemns the way the church has relied on shame. And his church was hugely popular, with thousands attending his sermons in London. He went on a Tour of the States in New York and Chicago, to crowds of five and ten thousand, according to an online encyclopedia.its only found out about him because H.G. Wells endorses him in his book, First and Last Things
Five years after The New Theology was published, there was an article in the New York Times (you can find a copy through the online encyclopedia) that said the author, R. J. Campbell went on record to say he believed he was reincarnated, that he could actually recall some of his previous lives. He said further that he believed the next coming of Jesus would also be a rebirth process. You can find an actual scan of the NY times article in the links at the bottom of the wikipedia page for him.
Suddenly, ten years after this book was published, after an experience at the front lines of WWI in the trenches, the author suddenly had a change of heart and recanted what he wrote here. He attempted to buy up all the books that had been sold and destroy them so nobody could read this book. He converted to Catholic and attempted to live out the rest of his life (until the 1950s) under the radar. It appears that he succeeded in hiding his light under a bushel.
This book, The New Theology, could easily be used as a base text in current Unity churches or Unitarian Universalist (UU) services, or even in Reiki circles.
Someone ought to make a movie about Campbell..
